The effects of gum disease can lower the gumline. This will in turn expose the dentine of the root which contains the tubules leading directly to the nerve. Hot, cold & sometimes sweet foods can cause pain. A special paste is available that can be applied to provide some relief from this condition.
If the gum has receeded and a large area of root is exposed, or excessively worn or decayed, the root can be re-enameled with a white filling material to same colour of the tooth using an adhesive technique which does not involve any drilling or local anaesthetic (injection) and is painless.
